Google Compute Engine gets Custom Machine Types for greater VM configuration
Google Compute Engine's virtual machines just got a little more flexible – and possibly more cost-effective. With the general availability of Custom Machine Types, Google indicated in a blog post that the flexible configurations could save users up to 50 percent on costs, although 19 percent is closer to reality for most customers.
Custom Machine Types, which has been in beta since November, lets users create virtual machines with their own vCPU and memory configurations. The idea is to enable the creation of VMs that best fit specific workloads' compute and memory requirements.
Some comments on the blog indicated this feature is somewhat overdue. Configuration options for infrastructure as a service instances simply provide greater flexibility – something already experienced in other areas of cloud computing.
"Custom Machine Types extend Google Compute Engine's tradition of making IaaS truly flexible and ensuring you only pay for the resources you use. Per-minute billing broke you free from the imposed hourly charges," wrote Sami Iqram, product manager for Google Cloud Platform, in the blog post.
For heavier users, Google is also offering what it calls "sustained use discounts." They're applied automatically and are based on usage.
Custom VMs can be launched with as few as a single vCPU and as many as 32, with up to 6.5 GiB of memory per vCPU. During the beta, the instance types supported CentOS, CoreOS, Debian, OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. At launch, Google has expanded the supported operating systems to include Red Hat Linux and Windows.
